The following are our activities in Mar 2010 :
I. Documentary: “Islam in India” [Mar 4 – Thursday, 1715 hrs]
This 60 minutes documentary (in
English) describes the beginnings and the history of Islam in India and
how it has become an integral part of Indian culture.
II. Special Documentary on International Women’s Day : “Song of the Sanctuary” [Mar 8 – Mon , 1715 hrs]
This 30 minute documentary in
English portrays three Indian women who have made important
contributions towards women’s empowerment in India.
III. Lecture : “Contribution of Buddhism to Chinese Culture” [ Mar 12 – Fri, 1700 hrs]
Prof. Wang Shuying, is a
well-known expert in Indian history, culture and society. He has
written many books on India which have received wide acclaim in China
as well as in India. His brief profile is below. This 45 minute talk
shall be in Chinese.
IV. Book Talk : Mr. Amit Chaudhuri [ Mar 15 – Mon, 1700 hrs] - (to be confirmed)
Mr. Amit Chaudhuri is a
well-known modern Indian author who was many awards like the
Commonwealth Writer’s Award and India’s Sahitya Academy award. He is
also a talented Indian classical musician. Mr Chaudhuri shall talk
about his books during a 45 minute talk. His brief profile is below.
V. Film show : “Pinjar” (Skeleton) [ Mar 22 – Monday, 1600 hrs]
This 2003 Bollywood film (3
hours, English subtitles) is a gripping love story set in the back
ground of hate and violence during partition of undivided India in
1947. The film won many Indian National Film Awards.
VI. Photo- Exhibition : “Indian Festivals” [Exhibition period – Mar 22 to 26 , 1000 – 1730 hrs daily (except Mar 24)]
A general photo-exhibition
describing major festivals of India. India is land of many traditions
and cultures and therefore celebrates many festivals and occasions. The
photos have both English and Chinese texts.

Storyline Film : Pinjar
(Skeleton) [2003] The film is a human saga set during India - Pakistan
partition in 1947. The story of Pinjar reveals many of the types of
tragic atrocities committed during this time period, and illustrates
the existence of love and victory during a backdrop of hate and
violence. Pinjar includes the story of Mohanlal and Tara, their two
daughters, Puro (Urmila Matondkar) and Rajjo (Isha Koppikar) and their
son Trilok (Priyanshu Chatterjee). Puro is a young women, engaged to
marry Ramchandra (Sanjay Suri), a rich Indian poet. Puro excitedly
waits for her day to be married to the man of her dreams when the
unfortunate occurs. A day before the wedding, she is kidnapped by an
angry Rashid (Manoj Vajpayee). Unlike other women who have been victims
of such hatred, Puro decides to change the direction of her life after
the incident.

Mr. Amit Chaudhuri (b. 1962) Amit
Chaudhuri is, according to the Guardian, 'one of his generation's best
writers.' His latest novel (his fifth), The Immortals, was a New Yorker
Book of the Year, and Critics’ Choice, Best Books of 2009, in the
Boston Globe and the Irish Times. He is also an internationally
acclaimed essayist, and a musician, having performed worldwide as a
singer in the Hindustani classical tradition, and as an experimental
musician at venues such as the London Jazz Festival and the Brecon Jazz
Festival. Among the prizes he has won are the Commonwealth Writers
Prize, the Society of Authors' Betty Trask Award and Encore Award, the
Los Angeles Times Book Prize, and the Government of India’s Sahitya
Akademi award. He is Professor of Contemporary Literature at the
University of East Anglia, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of
Literature. He was one of the judges of the Man Booker International
Prize 2009. He is also the first Indian writer to have had a Guardian
editorial written about him, “In Praise of… Amit Chaudhuri”. More
